RIP Square Crisps

Square Crisps, once my favourite crisps in the whole wide world, have been discontinued. It's all been downhill since "Walkers" (or Lays really) bought Smith's and started doing the American tradition of putting in more air than crisps into the packets. So now it's just down to Hula Hoops and Real McCoys.

What with the old TVS Studios having been torn down, a little more of me dies each day.

English Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving. Although I'm not in America so no one celebrates Thanksgiving. I wonder if Canada does, or do they just say "Hey, them there 'mericans be taking the day off, eh? We should prolly do the same, eh?" Accents don't translate well to text. My apologies to any Canadians who may be reading.

I'm going to try and watch the parade online later today, but as I'm on mobile internet, I have the same draconian system of limited internet access I had in Australia. I think this is a good enough cause. Remember the holiday season starts at the end of the parade!

For the first time in 18 years, my holiday season isn't going to start after the parade, it's going to start when I go down and watch the lights turn on in Lymington.

Getting Around

I've been spoilt rotten by public transport (even the dire Sydney bus/train system), and now I have re-entered car country. When I look at where these jobs are going to be, I don't think I can make it there without a car. So I'm looking for a cheap car today. I can't drive Mum's as it's a stickshift and I'm stuck on automatics (sad I know).

Heading To Reading

That rhymes. I wonder why I didn't use that as a title the last time I went to Reading. I'm going up to see the family this weekend, so it will be great to catch up.

Moving ahead on the job front, due to being a bit more worldly and less naive, I'm more choosy about jobs this time around, which might come back to bite me in the ass. We'll see.

More Luck Already

I've had more luck in one day than the entire four months I was here the first time around. While I don't have an interview, I got about four calls trying to arange things and find out salary requirements and stuff.

Looks promising. But so did the Titanic...

Back Again (Again)

*Yawn* Oh man I had the craziest dream! I dreamt I went all the way around the world and met the coolest people and had an awesome time!

Now where was I? Oh yeah, finding a job here in Hampshire!

There are hurricane force winds down here today, so it looks like a bit of a disaster, but we'll get through it!

The Last Train Home

Not as long a post today.

Although i was prepared to deduct points for all the weirdos I bumped into along the Champs-Élysées, all was forgiven with this morning's tv. The first episode of the original Ninja Turtles miniseries, a strange early 90s French 'Friends' ripoff where they just played Neo-Geo the whole time, and really old pre-Z Dragonball. This town knows just how to make me happy!

The case didn't get arrive untill 11:30 last night, so due to my trip on the Eurostar today, they are sending it to Sway ahead of me. At least this means I don't need to take a cab to Waterloo.

Oh and I went into McDonalds yesterday and ordered a 'Royale with Cheese'.

You know why they call it that? Because of the metric system.

A Tail Of Three Cities

The weirest 48 hours of all time.

So I get everything sorted out in Sydney, and head to the airport, where Qantas tells me my bag is 5 kilos overweight and I have to pay a charge. Of $100 a kilo. What the hell? Then she says "Oh no, you have some sort of special pass or something, so it's cool." Far be it from me to argue. Once we're done bording the plane (after playing musical queues with the idiots at the desk), I get a whole row to myself to lay down in. But I have a noisy child in front of me. Can't have everything.

By the time we get to Hong Kong (which judging by my attempts to actually *see* the damn city, seems not to exist) it's about midnight Sydney time, and I've been up since 7:30. So I'm a bit drowsy. Couple that with everything in Chinese, a gigantic departure area that makes you feel about an inch tall, and the most random collective of the world's people ever, and you've got a recipie for deliriousness. I had no idea where anyone was from, let alone if they spoke english. I kept bumping into this one girl, and then caught her playing 'King of Fighters XII' is the food court. Why on *earth* do they have that game there, and why is she playing it? And why is she really good? She asks me if I want a go, but by the time I ask her if she's a big KOF fan, she's gone. I'm almost positive she was a figment of my sleep deprived imagination.

Then I get on the flight to Paris. Well Air France lives up to it's French name with the best airline food in the world bar none, and the worst built plane I've been on since Air India. But they have this random self-serve open bar at the back of the plane, so me and this French chick just spent half the flight back there drinking free Heineken. Oh and the best part of the flight was when the snooty steward asked in his French accent, "What kind of wine would you like?" and I replied "Scotch".

Oh and the stupid airline had to put my bag on another flight becuase it was too heavy. Hopefully it arrives this afternoon. Way to go guys.

But was it all worth it?

When the taxi was taking me to Paris, we drove through the outer "ghettos" with the same type of shitty 1960s public housing as everywhere else. But as we were getting closer, you could see the "famous" Parisian architecture. "Eh" I thought. "This is it? Another letdown." Then I saw something I will remember for the rest of my life. The first time I saw Paris. The REAL Paris. Good Lord it is beautiful. If you've never seen it, movies and postcards don't do it justice. It's like Charlize Theron gorgeous. The type that's so good looking, the competition needs to use their personality to keep them competitive. And it posh and fancy too, just how I like them. But it does it so effortlessly that it almost looks understated. No other city can compete with the way it makes you feel. Not London. Not New York. Not Los Angeles. Not Miami. No one. I've never felt this way about a city, let alone so quickly.

And the girls here are batting at South Beach's level. What more can I say...

Carry Me Home

"Lord oh Lord, I did everything I could do! And Lord oh Lord, carry me home!"

If you can recall what song that is from, remind me to high five you next time we meet becuase you are officially awesome!

Yes, in just a few days, it's D-Day. The day I return to Europe. I think when I went back to England the first time four and a half years ago, I felt like I had some sort of divine right to be there and succed. Looking back, it wasn't arogance, but hope and dreams. This time around, I have the work and life experience behind me that should hopefully produce the desired results, but the criteria for staying has changed. Due to the fact that I've now seen the best the world has to offer, I'm going to be a bit more picky with the job I accept, and way more specific with where I'm going to live. The fact that "Oh, it's in England" no longer cuts the mustard. It has to stand on its own two legs now.

I'll try to blog while I'm in Paris, but if not, the next time I update, I'll be back where I started.

Melbourne Rocks!

I think I can safely say that Melbourne is awesome. I had a great trip down there, and not only had a good time, but realised that I'm still rubbish on a bike, and need to exercise more. And I found Batman Avenue! High fives all around!

Seeing as how I'm going back to England next week, I should be acting like a smart person and looking for jobs online. But I've found out looking for jobs before I go somewhere is pointless, and I should just go to the coffee shop in my pajamas instead.
