Like A Movie

Today is a wild day. I'm moving to the East Village this afternoon, so I'm packing up. Then I told the landlord when I'd be moving out, and I heard the the celing that his wife didnt take it too well. (Even though I told her two weeks ago!) I don't understand Chinese, but it certainly sounded loud.

But it's a cloudless, sunny day, and there's still snow everywhere, so despite the weirdness, I'm in good spirits. Here's to a new start!

It's Official

I rule. Accoring to the best book cover designer in the world! I went and saw Chip Kidd at a book signing in Tribeca and we talked about the artisic direction of Factory Records in the 80s. When he signed his book for me, he wrote "Richard, You Rule!!" Thanks!

It's also official that I'm moving to the East Village, the trendiest part of town. I get the keys tomorrow, and my fancy new bed gets delivered saturday, but I probably wont be able to move in untill next friday, as they still have to clean it up a bit. Not like the last place I moved to. Hmmmmmmmm.

Movies in New York...

...are very expensive. $12.00 and no student discount. That's about double what I'm used to paying. And then the movie studios wonder why kids download movies so much. Maybe because they arn't rich like the studio heads and can't afford to splash out $12 to see a movie that might be rubbish.

The audience we're really quiet. To the point of parents telling their small children to "shut up" during the film. Which is the complete opposite of theatres in South Florida. People are friendly here in general. It's slightly odd if you ask me...

Snow

It snowed today. Properly, all day. And it stayed on the ground too. So for the first time since I was seven years old, I have walked in real snow. What's odd is that it didn't feel different like I thought it would. It felt familiar, like it was something I do all the time.

I was sort of hoping I'd see real snow in England or Holland before I saw it here, but you can't have everything can you. Maybe I'll wait for that to go sleding!

Edit: Not to get all sappy, but outside really does look pretty with all the untouched snow over everything. And the fact that the clouds are so low they bounce the city's light back down so you can actually see the snow to begin with only makes it all the more special.

Two In A Row

Last sunday was the super bowl, where the New York Giants caused the greatest upset in super bowl history by beating the previously undefeated New England Patriots and cementing the 1972 Miami Dolphins as the only undefeated team in NFL history. I saw the first quarter at Troy's place, then took the train into the city and watched the last quarter in Times Square. Which promptly exploded after the giants won.

This, combined with the Miami Heat winning the NBA Finals last year, marks two years on the trot I have been in a city that has won a major national championship. I was joking with everyone that maybe I should move to Southampton next yeah, eh?

Thank Goodness

As I was walking into the cafe for lunch, I saw a massive group of teenagers that could have only been english 'yoof'. The product in their hair and the tracksuits were a dead giveaway. Must try harder lads.

These updates might have to start going back to a 'once-a-week' affair for a while as I canceled the appointment to get internet. That's becuase I've handed in my 30 day notice in Queens. I've decided I don't want to stay there any longer than I have to and now I'm looking again in Manhattan. Hope I find something like that one bedroom apt in central park north, but so long as its clean and in a nice area, I'll be fine. I'm picky, but not too picky.

Ok fine, I am that picky.
